“Heart in the Machine”

welcome

> This is my virtual sketchbook. I envisioned a grand portfolio of sorts. But personal achievements are more like a cabinet of curiosities than an outdated collection of blocks or links. I just celebrate myself in domains I enjoy.

I choose to bypass the urge to impose order to and control over everything. I recall an anecdote. A promise that still is…

While walking through downtown Montpellier, some years back in spring, I noticed what seemed like an Asian atelier in a liminal street I had never been into. Already fascinated by traditional ink painting, I knocked on the door. A young girl opened and told me the workshop was closed for lunch. I returned later that day, and this time the doors were opened and I was greeted by the master. We discussed the surrounding artworks and I showed him some of my attempts in my cellphone gallery. By the end of my visit, I was told to forget about art and invited to return in five years for free lessons.

I was encouraged to come back when I finally lived up to my Mandarin-styled name and had learned to see with my ears, among other things. He dispatched me with a signed magazine featuring series of his. I left the place amazed. More than five years have passed since this encounter, and I still haven’t returned. I don’t know if this is good or bad. Yet, when I leaf through the booklet and memories, images of bamboos made up of words make me feel I grow less rigid.
